Baked Elephant Ear

Whenever I go to our festivals and fairs, I have to buy an Elephant Ear to eat. No these are not real Elephant Ears! Dough deep-fried in oil and covered in cinnamon sugar makes these one of my favorite fair foods. Now that winter is just around the corner, the festivals and fairs are finished for this year.

I thought I would make my own healthier version by baking tortillas instead of deep-frying the dough. My grandchildren love cinnamon and so do I. Since they are visiting today I thought we would try some. We had an entire new bag of extra-large flour tortillas so I thought I would try to make Elephant Ears out of a few of them to see how they would taste. They bubbled up just like the fried dough Elephant Ears do and tasted amazing. What an easy and quick way to make these delicious treats!

  1. These look so good! My grandmother, at Christmastime, would make bunuelos (a similar Spanish treat) from scratch. I am looking forward to making your version… Elephant Ears, thanks.

  2. It reminds me of what mom does with her left over pie crust. Rolls it out, brushes it with butter, sprinkles the sugar and cinnamon on top, rolls it up into a log and then cuts them to an inch and a half. Bakes them in the oven on parchment. We looked forward to them more than the pie itself!

  3. Awesome and interesting!!!I like the name and recipe.. It’s so easy to make..I should try this..I always like quick recipes… Love it…

    • Thank you Cortlyn! I thought there are so many new cooks every day and by doing the step by step it makes cooking more appealing to them. Also, if somebody doesn’t understand the recipe they can look at the step by step directions and figure it out. But of course they can always contact me and I am happy to help understand any of my recipes! Have a great day!

  4. I have never heard of these before. I love cinnamon toast so I am pretty sure I will like these. I have all the makings so will have to make myself and Elephant Ear. Thank you, for posting this.

  5. I’ve recently had my first-ever elephant ear. It was HUUUUUUGE! It was dusted with powder sugar instead of cinnamon. It was so good, but because of a slight breeze, more of the sugar ended up in my hair, on my face, on my shoes, and on my body than in my mouth.

What an easy and interesting recipe that is. I think I might have to try that.

    • Aren’t they amazing!!!!! Have you tried a funnel cake yet? I like cinnamon on my elephant ears and powdered sugar on my funnel cake! That had to be hilarious seeing you covered in powdered sugar….lol

      • Yes, I’ve had funnel cake. I really had no idea what I was missing. Have you had a deep fried Snickers?

It totally was. I just prayed cops wouldn’t stop me thinking I was snorting coke.

      • Yes I had deep fried Snickers but I didn’t like it. Go figure I’d rather just eat the Snickers bar….lol OMG that is hilarious I bet it did look like you were snorting!!!!
