Wilted Lettuce Salad

Fresh Fall lettuce from our garden inspired me to make this Wilted Lettuce Salad. I remember my Mom making this when I was a kid. You can use any type of lettuce for this recipe. The hot dressing drizzled over the lettuce is what gives it the name Wilted Lettuce Salad.

Ingredients

Cook bacon until crisp, let cool then crumble.

To the hot bacon grease add the rest of the ingredients except the lettuce. Stir and cook until the sugar and salt are dissolved. Add bacon, stir and remove from the heat.

Place lettuce on a dish. Drizzle hot dressing with bacon over the lettuce and serve.

Wilted Lettuce Salad

Ingredients

8-10 cups lettuce, any type

5 pieces of bacon

1/4 cup white vinegar

2 green onion, slice into small slices

1 Tbl sugar

3 Tbl water

1/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

Directions

In a large frying pan, cook the bacon until crisp. Using tongs remove cooked bacon and put on a paper towel lined plate. Let cool then crumble.

To the frying pan with the bacon grease add salt, pepper, white vinegar, green onion, sugar and water. Stir and heat until the sugar and salt are completely dissolved. Remove from the heat and add crumbled bacon. Drizzle over the lettuce, mix well and serve.

  1. Lovely- And this salad is so good! I first got the recipe from a friend in North Carolina who called “Kilt Lettuce”. She had the recipe down from her mother and grandmother. Her name for it had me thrown for awhile 😉
