Slow Cooker Apple Butter

IMG_1794

It’s almost that time of the year where I live.

My apple tree’s are full of apples and almost

ready to pick. There is not an easier way to make

Apple Butter than in a slow cooker. The wonderful

aroma in the house is the best air freshener you

will ever have. I freeze my apple butter but it can

also be canned. I will not talk about the

canning method due to the safety factor.

Peel, core and dice the apples into small pieces.

In a slow cooker, mix the apples with

all of the other ingredients.

******

Cook, covered, on high for 1 hour. Turn to

low and cook covered for 9 to 11 hours,

stirring occasionally.

******

Remove the lid and cook another hour.

Using a whisk to stir will give

you a smoother Apple Butter.

Ingredients

  • 5 & 1/2# apples (peeled, cored and diced) Like McIntosh or Fuji
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 cups white sugar

Directions

  1. Place the prepared apples into the slow cooker.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix all of the other ingredients. Pour this mixture over the apples in the slow cooker and mix well.
  3. With the lid on the slow cooker, cook on high for 1 hour.
  4. Reduce heat to low and cook 9-11 hours, stirring occasionally, until mixture is thickened and dark brown.
  5. Uncover and continue cooking on low for 1 hour. Stir with a whisk to increase smoothness if desired.
  6. Spoon Apple Butter into sterile containers, cover and refrigerate or freeze. If you are freezing, make sure you leave about 1/2″ head space for when it expands.

  1. I do this same thing only with pears. I don’t add sugar because they’re sweet enough. Pear Butter!! Yummy!!

  2. Wonderful 🙂 just recently I saw on one blog was used apple butter. What is it??? I never heard this before.
And now you are shared recipe !! 🙂 just amazing:) I can try something new

    • Apple Butter is like a thick applesauce with flavoring. It is eaten many ways but I like it on bread or toast. Very good! If you make it, start with 2 cups of sugar and cook until the apples cook down. Then taste to see if you want more sugar. My apples are very tart so I use a lot of sugar.

  3. I made apple butter a couple of years ago and froze it in small jars. I just used the last one and my daughter is already asking me to make more. I can not find the recipe I used then, so, this will be the one I use this year. Thanks for sharing Diane.

  4. I have just finished cooking this following this recipe. Its DELICIOUS but quite thin. Any suggestions to thicken it up now that its already done cooking?
